thirteen things we're anticipating

It's a season of expectation and preparation.  We get to choose what we're expecting, though... so often, December has a way of sneaking up on me with obligations, higher expectations, and extra costs.  This year, we're trying to make it a bit different.

We made a list in October - yes, around the time of this post - of experiences we wanted to have during advent.  Some were simple, some required scheduling.  Our idea was that we'd intentionally say "yes" to some things, and "no" to others.

It has worked in some ways.  There's also the rush of new invitations and opportunities around this time of year.  A constant stream of potential stress gives us a chance to have grace with each other and ourselves!

I was blessed with many traditions and good memories of Christmastime.  That is a gift in itself, and one worth sharing.  I'm also interested to know the traditions, stuff, and fun other people enjoy this time of year.  Here's a small sample of our practical list.  I've written in no particular order.  Please join the conversation and leave you own ideas in comments!
  1. Cut down our Christmas tree

  2. Attend the tree lighting ceremony and carols in the town square
  3. Bake cookies for the neighbors (with enough for us, too!)

  4. Host a potluck Christmas dinner with our small group

  5. Hang lights on the outside of our house

  6. See the Christmas ships sail down the river

  7. Visit the Grotto to experience the beauty of that place and hear some wonderful music

  8. Load a huge library of Christmas music onto my iPod

  9. Make handmade gifts for loved ones

  10. Take the boys ice skating, and enjoy a hot chocolate at Nordstrom's cafe afterward

  11. Hang my grandparents' Santa Claus painting in our home

  12. Learn Silent Night on my guitar

  13. Take part in a candle-lit service on Christmas Eve
Not everyone is celebrating, nor excited, at this time of year, but many people write lists on Thursdays.  Visit them!

blessings,
MamaToo

Very wonderful and meaningful list you have written. THe sound of the Christmas ships sounds interesting....we don't get many ships where I live. I hope you fulfill all of your listed wishes.

A lighting ceremony and carols in the town square sounds wonderful! So inviting. We don't have anything like that here in my town.

I already put the carols on my iPod..listen to them all the time!!!

Sassy - yes, the Christmas ships are one of the benefits of our location. Last year it was a highlight, so we're hoping to have nice weather to enjoy it again this year!

mom huebert - we've already checked through a few items, but I'll keep posting here with more experiences!

the rock chick - yes, it sounds a little "whooville" when I write it down here, but it was lovely. Also amazing to live in a good-sized metro area that still sings "Hark the herald angels sing, glory to the newborn king!" in the town square!

courtney - thanks for stopping by!

You got me inspired to write my own list. Sounds like we like the same kinds of things. :) Mallory

funny - Anya and I went ice skating and then to the Nordstrom cafe (for a kid's frust & cheese plate) on Saturday. I wasn't really planning on that. Yet,we were hungry for a snack and I needed to justify using the Nordstrom restroom instead of the one by the food court. : )

It was a lovely time - I hope you get to do it.
