However, this celebrating business can go a few ways: consumer-driven, card-infused, and cliche. On the other hand, it can cause you & others to recognize a father who has bettered your life. It can be a holiday dripping with stuff, but it can also be something full of good memories and genuine appreciation.

However you celebrate that special dad, do not get him a tie.
Oh, I know they are easy to find and send. Yes, it's probably one of the gifts that is on sale. Sure, a tie goes wonderfully with his interest in fly fishing or patriotism or that new blue shirt you send with it. Of course, a tie always fits his size. Perhaps he even wears ties, so you think it would be useful.
Just restrain yourself. As a sincere service to all of my readers, I'm warning you: keep giving ties for holiday gifts and this is what your dad might do in his final days before retirement:

Obviously, the habit of giving my father a standby accessory has probably gotten a little out of hand. I love you, Dad! Enjoy your last week of wearing a tie to work...

As a child I always made things for Dad, spending many hours being creative and once the project was finished wrapping it with as much tape as possible, then finding a hiding place for it until Dad's special day.
When we went to Australia for a visit in Jan Dad and I were hanging out in his workshop at the bottom of the yard when he got out a large box that I had decorated when I was 7,inside it was every gift that I had ever made for him. We spent lots of time looking and laughing at each one.
Now my Dad is a man of few words, and as I stood in the workshop feeling like a little girl again, Dad made comment that he couldnt part with them, I had worked so hard to make him something special.
So I agree whole heartedly with Mama Too, NO TIES. This year we are going to be making Mr R his gift and Miss K is so excited she already has a hiding space picked out : )
Much love,
Aussie Mom
Know and love Dan. He will never again need to wear a tie, especially when he's working on his Toyota Cruiser, cruisin' with his Toyota Cruiser of drinking beer while crusin' in his Cruiser, nor when he's doing his artwork or fly fishing. He'll only need his UFAMKP t-shirt and a few friends to celebrate his next adventure. What a guy!!
