I try not to project specific careers or plans on my children. They're only 2 & 3, for goodness sake! But there is this small idea that is taking root in my brain...
I hope Obi-1 joins a band and does really, really well. I hope he gets to drum every day for as long as he likes. Perhaps, if there is such a thing as American Idol for Drummers, somebody could hook him up.
Okay, not really. But I must find a proper outlet for him, because he drums on everything, all the time. He has done this since he was, oh, about 6-8 months old. Now that he's nearly 4, I'm feeling like I'm not sure I can take that many more years of drumming. He was mesmerized by one of our former worship leaders, who would use combinations of percussion instruments when he sang. Even as a little tike, he'd imitate "Nathan" when he'd drum. I figured all kids go through this, and then parents can help them learn appropriate times & places for banging on things. I offered play instruments, music, and lots of games. He plays his CD's and music constantly in the playroom (yes, Obi-1 can DJ his own music now), and plays his favorite songs over-and-over.
And he drums on everything. Nothing is safe - walls, table, toys, church pews, water in the pool, bike handles, his brother's head...
What do I do?
Our neighbor has this Really Cool Drum Set that is sized for a toddler (he has a son Obi-1's age), and invited us over. I thought maybe he'll try it and either get bored or let it fade out. So I took Obi-1 over, and he kept playing that drum set for an hour and a half! He only stopped because he'd rubbed blisters on his fingers that finally broke through. As soon as band-aids were on, he wanted to go back. Now he wants one at our house (no, thank you very much. I like hearing. Please, Grandma, do not give him a drum set.)
The thing is, our neighbor was genuinely impressed by Obi-1's drumming, as if there was something uniquely good about his rhythm or interest. So I'm trying to appreciate this as some sort of gift that may eventually be used wisely. I wonder, do we know any moms of professional drummers who might be able to verify this theory?
